Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
I have no idea who these people are. But I can tell you one thing – these people are richer than God. – Crazy Rich Asians
This is the story of Rachel and Nicholas, that also includes his complicated family. Nicholas casually asks his girlfriend Rachel to spend the summer with him and his family in Singapore. This begins a complicated chain of events that includes every one of Nicholas’ family. When Rachel arrives in Singapore and realizes her boyfriend is from one of the richest families there, things start to take a turn for the worst. Rachel and Nicholas try to navigate their relationship as it turns to rocky ground with the continual interference of his crazy, rich family.
Kwan writes a wonderfully funny story that really shows you the meaning of “our family is complicated.” I really enjoyed the character of Rachel and felt she was the only realistic character. There are multiple family storylines that are sometimes confusing to try and keep track of each plot. Some of the storylines I felt were left unfinished by the end of the book (there is a sequel though). Nicholas’ mother makes you pray your future mother-in-law will never be like that. Overall Crazy Rich Asians will have you cringing in horror, crying with laughter and pulling an all-nighter to finish it (guilty). The crazy antics of Nicholas’ family are so outlandish, you cannot help by laugh with the ridiculousness of it all. 3.5/5
